A person could have poor color vision and not know it. Quite often, people with red-green deficiency aren't aware of their problem because they've learned to see the "right" color. For example, tree leaves are green, so they call the color they see green.

Also, parents may not suspect their children have the condition until a situation causes confusion or misunderstanding. Early detection of color deficiency is vital since many learning materials rely heavily on color perception or color coding. That is one reason the American Optometric Association recommends that all children have a comprehensive optometric examination before they begin school.

A color vision test, also known as the Ishihara color test, measures your ability to tell the difference among colors. If you don’t pass this test, you may have poor color vision, or your doctor may tell you that you’re color blind. However, being truly color blind is a very rare condition in which you’re only able to see shades of gray.

Color deficiency can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. The patient is shown a series of specially designed pictures composed of colored dots, called pseudoisochromatic plates. Pseudoisochromatic plate testing can determine if a color vision deficiency exists and the type of deficiency. However, additional testing may be needed to determine the exact nature and degree of color deficiency.

A multifocal lens is a lens that contains two or more prescriptions for correcting vision at different distances. These include bifocals, trifocals, progressives and special occupational lenses. Multifocals are designed to help people see well at various distances, especially as they age. Bifocals (meaning two) are prescribed to aid both near and far vision. Trifocals (meaning three) are prescribed to aid near, arm’s length and far distances. Progressive addition lenses are multifocals with a gradual change in the lens from distance to arm’s length to near without lines in the lenses. As people reach their early to mid-forties, their eyes gradually lose their ability to focus on objects that are close up. As a result, multifocal lenses are often prescribed to adjust to these changes.
Patients that wear contact lenses require some special care by the doctors. In addition to the eye exam, the doctor will provide services that are specific to the wearing and fitting of contact lenses. The doctor will evaluate the cornea for abnormalities that are specifically related to contact lens wear including corneal edema, corneal infiltrates, corneal neovascularization, and endothelial cell loss. The cornea will also be assessed for signs of improper contact lens fitting. Corneal diameter will be measured and compared to current contact lens diameter to determine if any adjustment in lens size is needed. Corneal surface curvature as well as the amount and axis of astigmatism will be analyzed to see if any change in contact lens base curvature is warranted.

With the results of those assessments, your eye doctor can provide a contact lens prescription that is the right fit for your eyes. An eyeglass prescription is no substitute for a contact lens exam because the two are very different. An eyeglass prescription measures for lenses that are positioned approximately 12 millimeters from your eyes; whereas a contact lens prescription measures for lenses that sit directly on the surface the eye. An improper fitting or prescription of contacts can damage the health of the eyes.
